Saddened to hear of the passing of former Philippine President Benigno Aquino III yesterday. He was 61.

I had the pleasure of meeting President Aquino many times over the years, including when he visited Singapore in 2014. We worked together to strengthen the ties between our two countries, and to advance regional cooperation in ASEAN and APEC.

President Aquino had a lifetime of illustrious public service. He served in the House of Representatives, then the Senate, and later the Presidency.

He felt a strong obligation to serve, especially due to his family history – both his parents were prominent political icons in the country. As President, he brought stability and rapid economic progress to the Philippines, and pursued policies that improved the lives and well-being of his fellow countrymen.

My heart goes out to his family, and to the Filipino people. His passing is a great loss to the Philippines. – LHL

Looking forward to President Xi Jinping’s visit. This pic was from our meeting in Beijing last November, at the APEC Summit. President Xi hosted our President Dr Tony Tan to a state visit in China in June/July, and now President Xi is making a return visit to Singapore.

In this SG50 year, Singapore and China are celebrating 25 years of diplomatic ties. We are working to deepen our friendship and cooperation. Will update with photos tomorrow. :) – LHL

At the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting last night, COVID-19 was on everyone’s mind.

I made 3 suggestions for APEC economies to fight COVID-19 and spur recovery: Deepen cooperation on vaccine development and deployment, resume movement of goods and people (safely!), and support inclusive development of our economies.

In 1994, the Bogor Goals set the vision for APEC in 2020. To replace the Bogor Goals, we launched the Putrajaya Vision 2040. Look forward to APEC leaders working together to achieve our goals. A shared interest in one another’s prosperity and success will bring about a more integrated, interdependent, and ultimately safer world. – LHL

2016年「亞太經濟合作經濟領袖會議」（APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting）11月將在秘魯利馬（Lima）舉行，蔡英文總統決定敦請宋楚瑜先生擔任我方領袖代表。親民黨主席宋楚瑜十月六日上午在秘書長秦金生、副秘書長劉文雄、立院黨團總召李鴻鈞、前內政部長李鴻源、前立委黃義交及文宣部主任黃珊珊、副主任吳崑玉以及外交部主任秘書章文樑陪同下召開記者會說明。

宋主席表示，蔡英文總統在八月四日接見他提到，過深思熟慮之後，希望委派他擔任APEC特使，代表總統出席會議。他在經過一段時間思考之後，以戒慎恐懼的心情，接受委派任務。宋主席表示，擔任特使參加APEC會議，不是一個職務，是個使命、任務；不是個人的榮耀，而是責任的交付。希望藉由參加這樣重要的會議，表達出中華民國在台灣的所有同胞，願意對世界的和平、世界經濟問題積極參與的態度與立場，做出貢獻。宋主席也感謝蔡總統及執政團隊對他的信任。

昨天下午，宋主席也再次到總統府，針對今日記者會談話內容與方向跟蔡總統提出報告。

宋主席提到，他七歲到台灣，在台灣成長，對於這塊土地有深厚的情感。從政以後，更瞭解到自己對國家社會的責任，承受經國先生許多教誨，對於台灣民主發展全力以赴。

宋主席指出：台灣現在面臨三個最重要的挑戰。第一，台灣的民主發展政治制度是不是可以很完整的把一個多元化的社會、民主的價值持續運作？這是一個很重要的挑戰，台灣正面臨這樣轉型。第二，台灣是否可以繼續維持我們可長可久的經濟發展，讓人民活得有希望、有願景，更要有尊嚴？第三，台灣是否可以跟對岸能夠發展出一個可行而務實的兩岸政策，雙方都能接受的一個交往模式，讓這個地區，不僅有和平，而且有願景和未來？簡單地說：第一，台灣政治要堅持自由民主價值。第二，經濟發展可長可久。第三，如何讓兩岸發展是互蒙其利、互補雙贏？APEC會員國的GDP總和，占全球GDP百分之八十，所以前往參加APEC 會議，就是要讓台灣的聲音可以被聽到，讓台灣的貢獻可以被看到，讓台灣可以積極參與。宋主席強調，他參與政治四十年，會把從政以來所接觸的、所累積的經驗和見解，還有台灣各階層的看法，向國際發聲。

宋主席表示蔡總統在當選之後，幾乎每個月跟他交換意見，但沒有一次是談到親民黨或他個人的事情，都是針對如何讓台灣的政治運作、民主價值、人民福祉能更好等等。他對蔡總統的誠意表達謝意。宋主席也指出，他在去年宣布參選之後，就一再呼籲放下藍綠，一起找出路，而今天台灣的民主，要能夠真正找出一條康莊大道，有待大家一起共同努力。

宋主席在會中，也以一副對聯表達他的心情。在滿清太平天國的那段時間，有位湖南前輩彭玉麟將軍，登泰山時寫下一個對子，上聯「我本楚狂人，五岳尋仙不辭遠」---「我本是一個湖南人，一輩子到處追求政治上的大道理，跑過名山大澤，五岳尋仙都不辭遠」。下聯是「地猶鄹（同鄒）氏邑，萬方多難此登臨」，就像台灣現在的情況，不管在兩岸關係、政治制度或經濟發展，真是萬方多難！所以，希望透過國際的經濟交往，展現出我們是有尊嚴的台灣人。宋主席還展示當年掛在省長辦公室的國父孫中山先生的墨寶真跡：「從容乎疆場之上，沉潛於仁義之中」，他強調，他會以從容的態度，展現台灣奮鬥的基本精神，讓世界不會漠視台灣，甚至誤解台灣。另外，展現出我們追求的就是仁和義，我們願意跟全世界和平往來，更願意跟大陸同胞彼此相親相愛，共同創造亞太地區真正的安定繁榮。

Darling Harbour is a harbour adjacent to the city centre of Sydney. It is also a large recreational and pedestrian precinct that is situated on western outskirts of the Sydney central business district. The locality extends northwards from Chinatown, along both sides of Cockle Bay to King Street Wharf on the east, and to the suburb of Pyrmont on the west. Cockle Bay is just one of the waterways that makes up Darling Harbour, which opens north into the much larger Port Jackson.

Darling Harbour is named after Lieutenant-General Ralph Darling, who was Governor of New South Wales from 1825 to 1831. It was originally part of the commercial port of Sydney, including the Darling Harbour Railway Goods Yard. During the Great Depression, the eastern part of Darling Harbour (Barangaroo) became known as The Hungry Mile, a reference to the waterside workers searching for jobs along the wharves.

Much of the land had been the site of the NSW Railways central marshalling yards and freight consolidation centre. The Enquiry into the NSW transport industry, including rail/road competition, (1978--80) under Commissioner Gavan McDonell, found that this centre was inefficient, should be moved, and the land used for other public purposes. These recommendations were acted upon and by the mid-to-late 1980s, when the area had become largely derelict it was redeveloped as a pedestrian and tourist precinct as an initiative of then New South Wales Minister for Public Works, Laurie Brereton. The Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre at Darling Harbour was a venue of the 2000 Summer Olympic Games and a key meeting venue of APEC Australia 2007.
