993曾被譽為最好的911，在整體設計僅保留部分部件是從964沿用而來。
993 Carrera S搭載是後期可變進氣歧管(Variolam)的M64 285匹引擎，使用Turbo的寬體車體，並將車身懸吊降低。
而Carrera S/4S車型從1997年推出僅做了2年，Carrera S也只做了3714台，遠低於Carrera與Carrera 4S的產量；993車系隨即在1998年停產，並推出下一世代"996"車系。
