#The100DayProject Day 1: Formosan Black Bear, a native animal from my Country Taiwan. I divided the 100 days into several themes. The first one is “Forest”. In the next few days, I will be drawing animals and plants from woodlands.

What I learnt about Formosan Black Bear:
Formosan Black Bear lives in the mountainous forests in the eastern two-thirds of Taiwan at elevations of 1,000 m to 3,000 m (3,300 to 10,000 feet). They don’t hibernate in the winter. This species was listed as "endangered" under Taiwan's Wildlife Conservation Act. Its snout resembles a dog's, hence its nickname is "dog bear". On the chest, there is a distinctive yellowish or white mark that is shaped like a "V" character or a crescent moon. This earns it another nickname — "moon bear”.

004/100 Toucan

What I learned about toucans:
Toucan lives in tropical forests. Its oversize and colorful beak is useful as a feeding tool. The birds use them to reach fruit on branches that are too small to support their weight, and also to skin their pickings. As a weapon, the bill is a bit more show than substance. It is a honeycomb of bone that actually contains a lot of air. While its size may deter predators, it is of little use in combating them.

012/100 Red Fox

I think red fox is one of the most beautiful animals in the world. It’s heartbreaking to see them suffer and die causing by the fur industry and hunting.

I really enjoy creating this drawing. I ordered some Stonehenge papers for this project which I haven’t used it for a long time. At first I felt the paper is a bit too toothy, because I am used to the smoothness of the Bristol paper I’ve beed using for my recent drawings. After working on the Stonehenge paper for a couple of hours, it started reminding me of how good this paper is for colored pencil art. It takes many many layers of pigments really well. I bought the large single sheets from dickblick.com. It also has various color tones to choose from.
